Wednesday 23rd August 2006
I've posted another upgrade which resolves a problem concerning the hexagram page of the yi jing volume when using readings which avail themselves of Chinese characters. In the upgrade posted a few days ago the characters were rather thin and undefined. In the upgrade posted today the characters appear more full-stroked and legible.
The upgrade filename is "yiup060823.exe", and is available from the software download page.
Sunday 20th August 2006
An upgrade for registered users has been posted on the 'downloads for registered users' page of the site. The changes have taken place in the two years (!) since the previous upgrade, and I have to admit that I have not recorded some of them, but the following are probably the most important :
1) Featured text to clipboard facility : The systems preferences now contains
a new (checkboxed) facility entitled 'featured text placed on clipboard'. When
ticked, whatever text is featured in the yi jing, diary and bagua volumes are
automatically copied onto the Windows clipboard. If the facility is enabled,
a small notebook icon appears in the top right hand corner of the san shan page.
2) 'Edit Personal Editions' : this option now appears in the opening contents list of the yi jing volume.
3) Lexicon Bookmark : this is now enabled.
4) Pages within volumes are now numbered 'page x of y' (ie 'page 1 of 10').
5) On the pages of the yi jing volume, the tooltip text which appears over each line of the graphic representation of the hexagram features the name of the hexagram resulting from the change of the particular line.
6) Yi jing volume : When selecting a particular hexagram from the scrollable list, the hexagrams are listed in the order of the currently selected Sequence.
7) Yi jing volume : When viewing the lists of 'Groups of hexagrams', clicking on the graphic representation of the hexagram will open the book at that hexagram.
8) Yi jing volume : when using the 'Oracle' facility (to list occasions a hexagram has been received in divination), the identity of any moving lines is featured in the list.
9) Essays Bookmark : this is now enabled.
In general, the manner in which the application accesses image files has been changed in order to reduce an occasional error which affected only a very small number of users. In testing the upgrade I noticed that the linear representations of the trigrams in the ba gua volume did not appear correctly. If this anomaly affects your san shan software following the upgrade, download the 'relevant .gif image files' next to the bagua volume download.
As always, I strongly recommend making a back-up copy of your existing san shan yi jing executable file ('c:\yi_jing.exe'), before installing the upgrade. If the upgrade behaves erratically, then you can easily restore the previous version.
And please let me know what you think of the upgrade, as well as mailing me
with details of any bugs and suggestions.
Saturday 12th August 2006
I shall be offline from Saturday 12th to Saturday 19th August 2006, so will be unavailable for technical support or registrations for this period. Any correspondence will be dealt with as soon as I get back.
An upgrade for registered users of the san shan yi jing application will be available on Sunday 20th August. Details of what is included in this upgrade will be posted on the site then .....
Saturday 6th May 2006 :
I shall be offline from Saturday 6th to Wednesday 17th May 2006, so will be unavailable for technical support or registrations for this period. Any correspondence will be dealt with as soon as I get back.
Tuesday 28 June 2004 : New upgrade available.
The (yi jing volume) hexagrams :
A fix is incorporated for a bug affecting the printing of the personal editions from the diary and the yi jing volume.
Sunday 25th April 2004 : New upgrade available.
The hexagrams : On the page of the yi jing volume containing the hexagram and its texts, a graphic representation of the ruler(s) of the hexagram has been added. The graphic displays a circle for the governing ruler(s) and a square for the constituting ruler(s) just to the right of the linear figure of the hexagram. This feature can be toggled "on" or "off" from the yi jing preferences page, although initially it is set to "on".
The Yi Lin resource : This has been enhanced so that the text of the resource can be edited. In addition, images or other files can be embedded into the articles to accompany the texts. These images or files can also be removed. Two new controls in the existing control panel in the resource have been added to enable this facility. Once an article has an accompanying image, a further set of controls becomes visible, allowing the user to select from various viewing modes, either full text or full image, or the text and the image can be viewed side by side in different ways. Additionally, the image mode can be set to "clip", "isometric", or "stretch".
22nd March 2004 :
Both the evaluation and the upgrade have been updated and are available to be downloaded now. The upgrade deals with some small issues following last month's upgrade. In addition, there are some enhancments to the Oracles Diary ...
21st February 2004 : New upgrade available.
Both the evaluation and the upgrade have been updated and are available to be downloaded now. ....
The upgrade also contains some groundwork for a facility whereby users will be able to build and edit their own lexicons. I'm still building this.
As always, any problems, let me know. Many thanks to all of you who continue to offer suggestions. Greatly appreciated.
7th January 2003 : New upgrade available.
Most of the upgrade consists of recoding existing routines, which should help the application run smoother and consume fewer resources. However, please note the following additions:
- An enhancement to the Study Diary, allowing a list of entries to be displayed which shows the first line of the entry. The relevant entry can then be chosen.
- A reworking of the application startup, allowing the registered user to choose to skip the opening sequence and go straight to the password screen. This exists at present, but the new feature will permit the user to set this as a default. The feature is available as "fastopen" when the lower left-hand panel of the bookshelf is revealed.
- If you change Reading or Line Style from within your diary page, you can choose to store it as your default.
Did you know that you can see the major sequences and groupings of the hexagrams at the Bookshelf by passing the mouse over the words "yi jing Book of Changes" at the top of the Bookshelf? This feature has been present for quite a while and I only mention it because a user contacted me to express his surprise when he discovered it.
I'm still working on an additional appendix to the Yi Jing entitled "Mutating Hexagram". The design is pretty well finished and I had hoped it would be ready by now, but a little more work I'm afraid ....
17th June 2002 : Six weeks or so overdue, but the upgrade is finally available, incorporating the following features
"San shan yi lin" - Once you have downloaded & installed the upgrade and the additional volume "Yi Lin" from the site, you will notice on reaching the bookshelf that a new volume has appeared. This is a user-maintainable resource, enabling you to create and store articles or notes on any aspect of the yi jing you wish. As an example of such a resource, you can use the example you downloaded (sanshan). In simple terms, the resource consists of a "title" and an "article", and any of the "title" words which appear in any of the "articles" are included in the "See Also" list on the page. There is also an Index, and a "History" list. After you create and save each of your titles and articles, simply "Update" the resource, and you can move from any article to any other related article. To find your way into how the facility works, open the sanshan resource and click on the "See Also" list or use the Index. Then, create your own. It could be a general resource for holding your own notes and thoughts on the yi jing, or it ccould be a specialised resource on a particular aspect of the yi jing. You can copy, rename or delete these resources.
Divination Sessions - As previously, you can enter your own notes on a divination session, but there is now the ability to bring up a list of Sessions and select a session to view in the Diary. The session list also brings in the first words of the session notes (as a session heading) to facilitate the identification.
Divination screen & Methods - A few changes to the layout here. You can either show or hide the oracle casting guidance notes, there is a simple graphic to help those unfamiliar with how the casting procedure relates to the hexagram, and the chinese names of the hexagram have been incorporated into the procedure. In addition, there are three further methods of consulting the oracle to accompany the existing one. Two of these will automatically cast each line of your hexagram, the first giving however many moving lines you receive, the second allowing only one moving line. The third method will create a hexagram by first selecting the lower trigram and then the upper trigram. It has long been intended to include alternative divination methods, and more will be added (suggestions always welcome).
Yi Jing Groups of Hexagrams : When selecting a group of hexagrams to view, a right click now enables you to view a list of the hexagrams which are contained in that particular category or group.
Hexagram Line Analysing : a new facility whereby the yi jing can be opened only with hexagrams which have selected yins or yangs in selected places; for example, to view only those hexagrams containing a Yang in the third place, a Yin in the fourth place and a Yang in the top place. Any combination of values and places can be chosen. Thanks to RF Arber.
Application Fast Open : Once the first picture in the opening sequence appears, press the Spacebar: you will be taken directly to the name & password entry
17th June 2002 : Another page added to the site showing users' comments. Nothing is printed without the user's express permission.
31st March 2002 : Firstly, many thanks for the suggestions, comments and issues sent in by users of the software. Secondly, san shan will be off-line from 4th April - 10th April 2002, and unavailable for registrations, technical support or other correspondence.
26th March 2002 : Two new features are to be incorporated into the san shan yi jing application as soon as tests have been completed.
The first, entitled "san shan yi lin" (The Forest of Changes), will enable a user to create his or her own editable resource of articles and essays. Each entry within a resource consists of a title and the essay. Titles are listed in alphabetical order. An additional function is the link word feature, whereby each title is also treated as a "keyword". If a text contains any of the title words within the collection, they also appear on a list of "See Also" articles. As a working example of such a collection, san shan's own resource will be available as a download. As well as being able to read the sanshan resource and your own resource, any user who wnats to make his or her resource available to other users of the software will be able to do so. More details nearer the time.
The second is within the Book of Changes volume, in Section II (Groups and Families of Hexagrams). Following a suggestion from and correspondence with a san shan user, R.F. Arber, a new facility has been developed whereby the yi jing can be opened only with hexagrams which have selected yins or yangs in selected places; for example, to view only those hexagrams containing a Yang in the third place, a Yin in the fourth place and a Yang in the top place. Any combination of values and places can be chosen.
The release for this upgrade is scheduled for the beginning of May 2002.....
8th October 2001 : The upgrade (& full installation) available as from today contain some enhancements to the software.
Firstly, in the yi jing itself there is another appendix, which permits viewing of corresponding lines texts between a hexagram and any of the related hexagrams. This means that you can read the text to any of the lines within a hexagram, and also the corresponding line in the inverted, opposite, or further related hexagrams.
Secondly, in the Diary, there is the following. A short time ago, an enhancement was added whereby the phase hexagram of any cast hexagram with moving lines could be studied. In the phase hexagram any moving line becomes a Yang line, and any static line becomes a Yin line. Hilary Barret (of onlineclarity.co.uk) contacted me with information regarding a system whereby the moving lines where changed into Yin lines, and any static line becomes a Yang line. This method has also been incorporated into the software. The first is called the "Yang phase" and the second is called the "Yin phase". I am aware that other names exist for these, but this seemed the simplest nomenclature for the purpose.
In addition to this, there is a facility whereby you can restrict your study of your oracles in the diary, to those divinations which have received a particular number of moving lines. This has been included, because in my studying of both types of phase hexagrams, it is especially interesting to look at the patterns of phase hexagrams received with particular numbers of moving lines within oracle hexagrams.
Users will notice some slight changes to the Diary menus, so as to accomodate these enhancements.
8th July 2001 : The upgrade (& full installation) available as from today contain two enhancements to the software.
Firstly, the phase hexagram can be invoked from any oracle with moving lines within the Diary. For details about the phase hexagram, see below under 15th June 2001. This follows a suggestion from Norbert Spekking.
The second enhancement concerns the Oracles Diary indexing facilty. The current indexing facility allows a user to choose to view oracles which fall into 3 categories: those on a particular subject, those cast within a period of time, and those which received a particular hexagram. An additional category now permits a user to study those oracles to which a particular related hexagram was given. This follows a suggestion from Ian Strange.
15th June 2001 : An upgrade is posted which addresses a screen freeze when viewing the nuclear hexagram of a static cast hexagram in the Diary.
Norbert Spekking has also explained to me the thinking behind the "Phase hexagram" and how it is formed. If your cast hexagram has moving lines, then an additonal hexagram can be derived, which helps to shed additonal light on the situation. This is done as follows: any moving line becomes a Yang line, and any static line becomes a Yin line. I had not come across this method before and it will probably join the list of features under development. I imagine the more moving lines are present in the cast hexagram, the more useful this tool is......
If anyone can share their experience of this method, then please get in touch.
8th June 2001 : An upgrade is available as from today. As well as some minor alterations to the bookshelf page, there is an enhancement to the Diary. It is now possible to read the Judgement and Image texts of the nuclear hexagram of both your cast and second hexagrams. This facility is accessed from the normal drop-down menu. Any comments about this are most welcome. And many thanks to "naspekking" for his suggestion.
Thanks also to Ian Strange for all his feedback & correspondence on bugs within the Diary Indexing function (now fixed).
22nd May 2001 : An upgrade posted today which allows Indexes to be invoked from with the Diary page, and fixes a bug which was preventing users from adding oracles and then opening the indexes.
18th May 2001 : There is an upgrade posted today which addresses a printing issue in the Diary. The full installation of the software has also been updated.
14th May 2001 : Now incorporated from this page is a list of frequently asked questions - see the contents list on the left.
14th May 2001 : Also, a user has requested the ability to look at nuclear hexagrams when working with hexagrams in the Oracles diary. This is under development. As less time is spent sorting out problems, more can be devoted to improvements and additions to the software. All ideas and suggestions are always most welcome ....
4th May 2001 : There is an upgrade posted today which addresses further the bug mentioned below. Of all the users out there, only one of you appears to be having problems with this, unless you're all too kind to mention it!!
28th April 2001 : The release of version 6.1.1 has gone reasonably smoothly. Users upgrading from version 5 have had no problems, and this is also the case for new users who have immediately registered their software. The only glitch in the new release was for those users who downloaded the software before 28th April 2001, and are continuing to use the software as an evaluation copy. They will have come across a bug in the Diary which corrupts the screen. This bug affects ONLY the software which is NOT registered. The fix for this is available in the latest upgrade, and in the full installation.
If you downloaded the evaluation software before 28th April 2001, then downloading the upgrade will fix the problem.
If you have already registered your software then you are not affected by the problem.
Many thanks to all users who have provided feedback, comments & reported glitches.
4th April 2001 : The latest version (6.1.1) is now available. New features include:
If you want to be kept informed of developments in san shan yi jing software, just send an e-mail with your name and e-mail address to firstname.lastname@example.org and you can receive the news by e-mail. This information will not become part of a database or be disclosed to any other party or person.
Meanwhile ...... please contact san shan if you find any typos in any of the text in the software. 4,000 pages of text is a lot to supervise. And of course any bugs which raise their heads. Feedback is always much appreciated.
